Thracian Peltast

This is the Thracian Peltast that first appeared in the Miniature Figurines 72/73 catalogue as PB 11s and subsequently in the 75 catalogue as PB 11.

Both PB ranges were based on Phil Barker's books Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars and Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome. This figure is taken from illustration 11 in AMPW.

As always, the 's' designation refers to the then new 25mm size models as opposed to the earlier and smaller 1/72nd range. The transition was soon complete and Minifigs dropped the 's' from their codes thereafter, but it's common to refer to the post-1/72nd as the 'S Range' for this reason - 's' standing for 'special'.

The base is stamped PB 11 on the upper surface in the usual Minifigs fashion.

This model carries a rather unusual weapon, the rhomphaia, comparable to the Dacian 'falx' encountered by the Romans some centuries later. Its effectiveness  under the contemporary Wargames Research Group Ancient rules would ensure that every army had its contingent of Thracians, making this a fairly common survivor.
