Macedonian Phalangite

This is the Macedonian Phalangite that first appeared in the Miniature Figurines 72/73 catalogue as PB 2s and subsequently in the 75 catalogue as PB 2.

Both PB ranges were based on Phil Barker's books Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars and Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome. This figure is taken from illustration 2 in AMPW.

The 's' designation was used to distinguish the newer 25mm style of models from the preceding, smaller 1/72nd range. The transition was soon complete and the 's' - special - was dropped from the figure codes thereafter.

The base is stamped PB 2 on the upper surface in the usual manner.

This figure and the PB 3 Macedonian Hypaspist both appear to have been built from a common body, and both have the curved extension to the front of the base (presumably to stop the model falling forward),

The interpretation of the body armour - or lack thereof - is unusual and follows the same thinking as the Mercenary Hoplite PB 8 - condemning the phalanx of Alexander the Great to the status of  'medium' infantry under the most popular rules of the time. I suspect this is why this figure is much less common that the PB 32 Phalangite, who is sensibly protected by armour and therefore qualifies as 'heavy' infantry (much better in the game!).
